The Trendiest Winter Coats 2013/14

A new coat has always been one of the biggest style investments for autumn and winter and 2013 is no exception. A coat, whether you buy one once every couple years or every season, is always a wardrobe staple. In terms of shapes and proportions this winter many coats are over-sized and slightly androgynous. However if you prefer more elegant and feminine style choose between a fitted dress style coat for a flirty look or a camel coat to look and feel glamorous.

Sleeveless Coat

It is probably not the most practical coat for cold months however paired with long gloves it could be a great choice for a transitional months. Also what the sleeveless coat lacks in warmth, it makes up for in elegance.

How to wear it

Only one rule to remember – keep your look simple to maximise an impact.

  • Layer up for warmth – wear it over tees or under coats for extra warmth.
  • Team with brogues for day, a heel for evening and always pair with an eye-catching clutch.
  • Pair  with a simple tank top, neutral coloured cardigan and pencil trousers.
  • For a casual look throw over skinny jeans.
  • The slight hint of a shoulder creates a sharp silhouette, which looks great paired with softer, more feminine pleated or floral skirts.
  • Wear with a belt to give it extra shape.
  • Best way to show off your elbow length gloves.

Oversized Coat

Forget about the borrowed-from-the-boyfriend bagginess. Softly curving shoulders, shapely silhouettes and luxurious cashmere mixes of cocooning cuts are a new womanly feel to oversized coats. Usually ‘statement piece’ and ‘practical’ are two concepts which rarely go together however this trend merges both concepts very successfully. The oversized coat will attract attention in a few seconds but it is also very practical and versatile. It is a perfect coat for cold months.

How to wear it

  • Oversized doesn’t mean you should look like you have drowned in the coat.
  • Pair it with the same colour top and bottom to make your coat to stand out.
  • Wear it with the same length dress and focus on your tights or leggings.
  • Don’t choose a long oversized coat – it will make you shorter.
  • Pair it high heels – the oversized coat essentially needs some height and lengthening of the legs.
  • Fold the sleeves to show some arm in order to minimise the ‘drowning’ effect.
  • Wear it with a belt to add some shape.

Fur Coat

This season fur is more popular than ever and it seems that no amount of controversies can convince designers to give up  on fur accents and opulent fur coats. The fur trend was interpreted in a myriad of ways this year, from graphically combined monochrome black and white fur as seen at Michael Kors, Altuzarra and Valentino to the exotic furs in fluorescent colors with grunge and disco vibes, as shown in the collections of Fendi, Roberto Cavalli, Versace, Kenzo, Gucci and others.

There are plenty faux fur versions as well so everyone has something to choose from. Faux fur is especially great if you want to buy a colourful piece.

How to wear it

  • Long fur coat is perfect for evening wear and special occasions.Wear it with an elegant dress and high heels.
  • Midi fur coat is the most versatile – it looks great paired with jeans and knee-high boots but it will look amazing with classic clothes or a cocktail dress.
  • Fur can make you look bigger as it is a bulky piece of clothing – to balance this up always wear something light and thin underneath. Don’t worry you won’t get cold, fur will make you warm enough.
  • Fur looks extremely luxurious and instantly catches the eye so keep your overall look simple.
  • The easiest way to follow the fur trend is to go for fur accessories. Fur hats, scarves, collars or vest can add chic to your look.

Colourful Coats

Colourful coats are an instant outfit updater this winter and it is an easy way to brighten up your day. Whether you prefer your colours acid bright or a little more subdued, there are colorful coats to suit all tastes.

Plaid Coat

This season designers have implemented masculine patterns into their collections. From plaid, houndstooth, prince of whales, windowpanes, to checked patterns were just some of the men’s fabric inspirations designers mixed with feminine looks. Alberta Ferretti took a navy patterned design to turn into a beautiful subtle coat any woman wouldn’t mind following this trend. Tommy Hilfiger chose to give his patterns a preppy look, while Lanvin went for an avant garde masculine touch and Dolce & Gabbana injected a feminine domination over those menswear patterns (you can read more about this trend here).

How to wear it

  • Plaid is easy to wear but beware of mixing too many patterns with it. Since it is such a detailed and colorful pattern itself, other patterns may overwhelm your outfit.
  • Petite women tend to be overwhelmed by big prints so stick to smaller plaid prints.
  • Women with curvy figures should opt for muted plaids rather than big and bold prints.
  • Plaid is available in many different colours but for a more modern look go for light pastes or bright colours.
